Betahistine 16 mg, 24 mg

Betahistine is a medication that improves microcirculation in the inner ear and is used to treat disorders associated with the vestibular system. It belongs to histamine-like agents and is widely prescribed for vertigo and balance disturbances.

Dosage Forms

• Betahistine 16 mg, 30 tablets
• Betahistine 24 mg, 30 tablets

Pharmacological Action

Betahistine:

• improves blood flow in the inner ear
• reduces endolymph pressure
• enhances transmission in vestibular nuclei
• decreases the frequency and severity of vertigo attacks
• reduces tinnitus and hearing loss

It works as a histamine analogue acting on H1 and H3 receptors.

Indications

Betahistine is prescribed for:

• Ménière’s disease
• vestibular vertigo
• tinnitus
• imbalance and coordination disorders
• nausea caused by vestibular dysfunction
• post-traumatic vestibular rehabilitation

Effective for both acute and chronic vertigo.

Administration and Dosage

Dosage depends on individual symptoms:

Betahistine 16 mg

• 1 tablet 2–3 times daily

Betahistine 24 mg

• 1 tablet 1–2 times daily

Tablets should be taken with meals and swallowed with water.

A stable therapeutic effect develops after 2–3 weeks.

Contraindications

• hypersensitivity to components
• pheochromocytoma
• pregnancy and breastfeeding
• patients under 18 years

Use with caution in:

• gastric and duodenal ulcers
• bronchial asthma
• low blood pressure

Side Effects

• nausea
• mild gastrointestinal discomfort
• headache
• allergic skin reactions

Generally well tolerated.
