Product Overview

Biovorin 15 contains Leucovorin Calcium, the active form of folic acid (Vitamin B9). It is commonly used in oncology and supportive therapy to protect healthy cells during chemotherapy and to counteract the toxic effects of folate antagonists such as Methotrexate.

Leucovorin is also known as Folinic Acid and plays a vital role in DNA synthesis and cellular recovery.

Uses & Indications

• Methotrexate Rescue Therapy: Reduces the toxic side effects of high-dose Methotrexate on normal tissues.
• Overdose Antidote: Used as an emergency treatment for Methotrexate overdose.
• Combination Chemotherapy: Enhances the therapeutic effect of 5-Fluorouracil (5-FU) in the treatment of colorectal and other cancers.
• Folate Deficiency Anemia: Sometimes used to treat megaloblastic anemia due to folate deficiency.

Mechanism of Action

Leucovorin bypasses the metabolic block caused by folate antagonists, replenishing reduced folates required for DNA synthesis and repair.
It “rescues” normal cells without diminishing the anti-tumor activity of chemotherapy drugs.

Dosage & Administration

Dosage and duration are individualized based on the specific chemotherapy protocol:

• Typical oral doses: 15–30 mg every 6 hours, as prescribed by a physician.
• Available in both oral and injectable forms.

Always use under medical supervision.

Side Effects

Generally well tolerated. Rarely may cause:

• Nausea, vomiting, or diarrhea
• Allergic reactions (rash, itching)
• Rarely, seizures at high doses

Contraindications

• Known hypersensitivity to Leucovorin or related compounds
• Pernicious anemia or other Vitamin B12–deficient anemias
