General Description

Glibenclamide Viatris is an oral antidiabetic medication used in adult patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus when diet and physical exercise alone are insufficient to achieve adequate glycemic control. It belongs to the class of sulfonylureas, which reduce blood glucose by stimulating insulin secretion from pancreatic β-cells.

Dosage Strengths & Presentation

  • 2.5 mg scored tablet
  • 5 mg scored tabletBoth preparations are available in blister packs/boxes for prescription use.

Indications

  • Treatment of adult patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus when diet, lifestyle modifications, and physical activity alone are inadequate to control blood glucose.

Administration & Dosage

  • Administer orally, with water, before a meal.
  • For adult patients under 65: initial dose may start at ½ tablet per day before breakfast (i.e., 1.25 mg or 2.5 mg depending on strength).
  • Maintenance dose adjusted stepwise by glycemic response; usual maximum up to around 15 mg daily, depending on patient’s condition.
  • Caution in elderly patients, or patients with renal/hepatic impairment, or irregular diet — dose should be lower and adjusted more carefully.

Contraindications & Precautions

  • Hypersensitivity to glibenclamide or other sulfonylureas.
  • Type 1 diabetes mellitus or diabetic ketoacidosis.
  • Severe renal or hepatic impairment.
  • Pregnancy and breastfeeding — use is not recommended.
  • Must ensure regular meals; skipping meals or alcohol consumption may increase risk of hypoglycemia.

Side-Effects

  • Common: Hypoglycemia—manifesting as sweating, trembling, hunger, tachycardia.
  • May include weight gain, nausea, diarrhea, skin rash.
  • Less common: severe allergic reactions, hepatic enzyme abnormalities, blood count changes, photosensitivity.

Drug Interactions

  • Interacts with other hypoglycemic agents, alcohol, beta-blockers, ACE-inhibitors, certain antibiotics/antifungals.
