Pharmacological Action

Levothyroxine is a synthetic form of the thyroid hormone thyroxine (T4).
It is converted into the active form (T3) in the body and regulates metabolism, growth, and development, as well as cardiovascular and nervous system function.

Indications

Used for:

• hypothyroidism
• euthyroid goiter
• after thyroidectomy
• thyroid cancer (as part of therapy)
• TSH suppression therapy

Dosage and Administration

• Taken once daily in the morning on an empty stomach

Contraindications

• untreated thyrotoxicosis
• acute myocardial infarction
• acute myocarditis
• untreated adrenal insufficiency
• hypersensitivity to components

Warnings and Precautions

• Regular TSH monitoring required
• Use cautiously in cardiovascular disease
• Usually continued during pregnancy
• Avoid sudden dose changes
