Product description
Selincro® by Lundbeck contains nalmefene, an opioid system modulator that acts on the brain mechanisms responsible for the rewarding effect of alcohol. Unlike classic abstinence-oriented therapy, it is intended to reduce alcohol consumption rather than require complete abstinence.
The product is a prescription-only medicine used as part of a comprehensive treatment program including psychosocial support.
Indications
- reduction of alcohol consumption in adult patients with alcohol dependence who do not require immediate abstinence
- as part of a treatment program with continuous medical supervision
Dosage and administration
Take one 18 mg tablet once daily, as needed, preferably on days when there is a risk of alcohol consumption, with or without food. The tablet may be taken sublingually to accelerate onset.
Treatment is initiated and reviewed by a physician; regular assessment of treatment response is required.
Contraindications
- hypersensitivity to nalmefene or any excipient
- current use of opioid medicines or acute opioid withdrawal
- opioid dependence requiring immediate detoxification
- severe hepatic or renal impairment
