Tenofovir is converted to tenofovir diphosphate, which inhibits reverse transcriptase, an enzyme essential for viral replication.
This prevents the virus from multiplying in the body.
Common: nausea, diarrhea, headache, fatigue, abdominal pain.
Rare: renal impairment, bone mineral density loss, or elevated liver enzymes.
