Description

Tenofovir disoproxil is an antiviral medicine belonging to the class of nucleotide reverse transcriptase inhibitors (NRTIs).
It is used to treat HIV-1 infection and chronic hepatitis B by blocking viral DNA replication.

Indications

• Treatment of HIV-1 infection (in combination with other antiretroviral agents).
• Chronic hepatitis B in adults and adolescents aged 12 years and older with active viral replication.

Mechanism of Action

Tenofovir is converted to tenofovir diphosphate, which inhibits reverse transcriptase, an enzyme essential for viral replication.
This prevents the virus from multiplying in the body.

Dosage and Administration

• Usual dose: 1 tablet (245 mg) once daily, with or without food.
• Dose adjustment may be needed for patients with renal impairment.
• Do not stop treatment without consulting your doctor to avoid viral resistance.

Side Effects

Common: nausea, diarrhea, headache, fatigue, abdominal pain.
Rare: renal impairment, bone mineral density loss, or elevated liver enzymes.
