Xifaxan is a drug in the form of coated tablets containing rifaximin, an antibiotic from a class of drugs called rifamycins. Xifaxan is an antibacterial drug used to treat symptomatic uncomplicated diverticular colon disease in adult patients following a richly plastic diet.
Composition
The active substance of the drug is rifaximin (Rifaximinum).
Each coated tablet contains: 200 mg of rifaximin (Rifaximin).
This medicine should always be used exactly according to the doctor's recommendations. If in doubt, contact your doctor or pharmacist.
The dosage is determined by the doctor individually for the patient.
The drug should be administered orally, washed down with water.
Action
Xifaxan has antibacterial activity. Rifaximin is an antibiotic belonging to the rifamycin group, it is only slightly absorbed in the intestine into the bloodstream (less than 1% of the administered dose), therefore it acts exclusively on microbes located in the intestine.
Indications
Xifaxan is indicated for use in symptomatic, uncomplicated diverticular colon disease in adult patients following a richly plastic diet.
Contraindications
Do not use the drug in the case of: hypersensitivity to the active substance or any component of the drug; intestinal obstruction; ulcerative colitis.
Side effects
Like any medicine, this medicine can cause side effects, although not everyone has them.
Side effects that occur frequently (affect from 1 to 10 patients out of 100): bloating, abdominal pain, constipation, sudden desire to defecate, diarrhea, bloating with gas, nausea, painful urge to stool, vomiting, fever, dizziness, headache.

Warnings and precautions
You should consult a doctor if the patient has: cirrhosis of the liver; impaired liver function; old age; impaired kidney function.
If a reddish urine color appears after taking XIifaxan, consult a doctor. This is caused by the active substance, which, like most antibiotics of the same family (rifamycin), has a red-orange color.
If you have diarrhea with fever or have blood in your stool, ask your doctor about the possibility of using Xifaxan.
The drug should be stored in a place that is invisible and inaccessible to children.
Use of other medicines
Tell your doctor about all the medications you are currently or recently taking, as well as the medications you plan to take, including those that are available without a prescription.
Information is especially important if you are taking or have recently taken: another antibiotic from the rifamycin group, taken to treat systemic bacterial infection; warfarin; antiepileptic drugs; antiarrhythmic drugs; cyclosporine.
When taking activated charcoal, Xifaxan should be taken at least 2 hours after taking charcoal.
Pregnancy and breast-feeding
If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, assume that she may be pregnant, or when she plans to have a baby, she should consult a doctor or pharmacist before using this medicine.
It is not recommended to use the drug during pregnancy and lactation.
The use of the drug in children and adolescents
It should not be used for children under 18 years of age.
