Product description
Aclasta® by Novartis contains zoledronic acid, a potent third-generation bisphosphonate. It inhibits osteoclast-mediated bone resorption, reducing the risk of fractures and bone complications.
The product is administered as an intravenous infusion and is a prescription-only medicine.
Indications
- osteoporosis in postmenopausal women and in men at increased fracture risk
- Paget’s disease of bone (osteitis deformans)
- treatment and prevention of glucocorticoid-induced osteoporosis, as prescribed by a physician
Dosage and administration
The recommended dose for osteoporosis is 5 mg once a year as an intravenous infusion over at least 15 minutes by a healthcare professional. For Paget’s disease, a single 5 mg infusion is usually sufficient; retreatment intervals are set by the physician.
Adequate hydration, calcium and vitamin D intake are recommended before and after the infusion. Administration is performed only in a clinical setting.
Contraindications
- hypersensitivity to zoledronic acid, other bisphosphonates or any excipient
- hypocalcemia
- severe renal impairment (creatinine clearance below 35 ml/min)
- pregnancy and breastfeeding
