Active Ingredient

Rifampicin 150 mg per capsule

Mechanism of Action

Rifampicin inhibits the DNA-dependent RNA polymerase in bacterial cells, blocking RNA synthesis and protein production, which leads to bacterial death.

Indications

• Pulmonary and extrapulmonary tuberculosis
• Leprosy (Hansen’s disease)
• Meningococcal carrier state
• Staphylococcal infections resistant to other antibiotics
• Atypical mycobacterial infections

Dosage and Administration

• Adults: 450–600 mg daily (3–4 capsules).
• Take on an empty stomach, 30–60 minutes before or 2 hours after meals.
• Always use in combination with other anti-TB drugs.

Side Effects

• Nausea, abdominal pain, diarrhea
• Orange-red discoloration of urine, sweat, or tears
• Elevated liver enzymes
• Allergic skin reactions

Contraindications

• Hypersensitivity to rifampicin or other rifamycins
• Severe liver disorders
• Pregnancy and lactation (unless prescribed by a doctor)
