Product Details

Glibenclamide Biogaran (Maninil) 2.5 mg, 5 mg

Manufacturer: Biogaran (France)
Dosage forms: scored (split) tablets — 2.5 mg and 5 mg.
Category: Oral hypoglycemic agent (sulfonylurea)

Description

Glibenclamide Biogaran is an oral medication for adult patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus, when diet, physical exercise alone are insufficient to achieve optimal glycemic control. It belongs to the sulfonylurea class, which lowers blood glucose levels by stimulating insulin secretion from pancreatic β-cells.

Strengths & Presentation

  • 2.5 mg scored tablet
  • 5 mg scored tablet

Indications

This medication is indicated for the treatment of type 2 diabetes mellitus in adult patients when diet and exercise alone do not provide adequate glycemic control.

Directions for Use & Dosage

  • Administer orally with water, typically before a main meal.
  • Dosage should be individualized by a physician. Initial low doses may be used (e.g., half a 2.5 mg tablet), and gradually adjusted to achieve target glucose levels.
  • The scored tablets allow dose division.
  • Caution in elderly patients, those with renal/hepatic impairment, or irregular nutrition.

Contraindications & Warnings

Do not take this medication if you:

  • are allergic to glibenclamide or other sulfonylureas;
  • have type 1 diabetes or diabetic ketoacidosis;
  • have severe liver or kidney dysfunction;
  • are pregnant or breastfeeding (unless otherwise advised by physician);
  • consume alcohol — may increase risk of hypoglycemia or “disulfiram-like effect”.

Side Effects

  • Very common: hypoglycemia — symptoms include sweating, tremor, hunger, confusion.
  • Common: weight gain, skin reactions (rash, itching), nausea, diarrhea.
  • Rare: severe allergic reactions, hepatic enzyme abnormalities, hematologic changes, photosensitivity.

Drug Interactions

This medication may interact with:

  • Drugs enhancing hypoglycemia (e.g., miconazole, erythromycin, beta-blockers).
  • Drugs reducing its effect (e.g., glucocorticoids, beta2-agonists).
  • Bile acid sequestrants (e.g., colesevelam) — glibenclamide should be taken at least 4 hours before.

Storage

Store in the original package, protect from moisture. Expiry date indicated on package.
