Indications
✓ Infantile Spasms (West Syndrome)
One of the first-line treatments in infants.
✓ Refractory Partial (Focal) Epilepsy
Used in adults and children when other antiepileptic drugs fail to provide adequate control of seizures.
Mechanism of Action
Vigabatrin irreversibly inhibits GABA-transaminase, increasing GABA levels in the brain.
This enhances inhibitory neurotransmission and reduces seizure activity.
How to Use
- Dissolve the granules in water before intake
- The dose is individualized
- Must be used only under medical supervision
Side Effects
Key possible adverse reactions include:
- Visual field defects (retinal toxicity) — risk increases with treatment duration
- Drowsiness
- Dizziness
- Fatigue
- Behavioral changes, especially in children
Regular eye examinations are required.
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to vigabatrin
- Pre-existing severe visual field defects
- Use during pregnancy only if absolutely necessary
Special Precautions
- Mandatory ophthalmologic monitoring before and during treatment
