Angeliq is the original Bayer Schering Pharma preparation for hormone replacement therapy (HRT). Each film-coated tablet contains 1 mg estradiol (as estradiol hemihydrate) and 2 mg drospirenone — an estrogen-progestogen combination designed for continuous daily use in postmenopausal women.
Drospirenone is a unique progestogen: it is structurally similar to spironolactone, so unlike classic progestins it also has mild antimineralocorticoid activity. In practical terms: it counteracts estrogen-related fluid retention rather than adding to it — many women on Angeliq report less bloating and water retention compared to other HRT regimens.
At the same time, drospirenone provides reliable endometrial protection — the reason every estrogen-based HRT needs a progestogen component in women with an intact uterus.
Angeliq is prescribed by gynecologists for:
HRT should be initiated only for symptoms that adversely affect quality of life, at the lowest effective dose, with annual benefit-risk review — this is the official European guidance and our position as well.
Commonly reported adverse reactions:
Medical attention should be sought for unusual leg pain/swelling, chest pain, severe headache or heavy unexpected bleeding.
A full health assessment (blood pressure, breast, thrombosis risk factors) is mandatory before starting any HRT — this is standard gynecological practice.
Angeliq is a continuous combined HRT: estradiol + drospirenone in every tablet, taken without breaks. Estrogen-only therapy is for women after hysterectomy. If the uterus is intact, the progestogen component is mandatory to protect the endometrium.
Drospirenone has antimineralocorticoid activity — it counteracts fluid retention instead of adding to it. Plus reliable endometrial protection. This combination is the distinguishing feature of Angeliq among combined HRTs.
No — Angeliq is continuous: finish one blister, start the next the next day. The week-day markings on the blister help maintain adherence.
Vasomotor symptoms typically improve within the first weeks of therapy. Full stabilization takes 1–2 months. If symptoms persist, the physician may adjust the dose.
Yes. Angeliq is a prescription medication. Annual benefit-risk review, blood pressure control and periodic gynecological assessment are standard practice for any HRT.
