Minomycin is a prescription antibiotic containing minocycline hydrochloride, a tetracycline-class antibacterial medicine. It works by inhibiting bacterial protein synthesis and preventing the growth of susceptible bacteria.
Minomycin capsules are officially available in 50 mg and 100 mg strengths.
The appropriate strength and treatment duration are determined by a healthcare professional.
Minomycin may be prescribed for a range of bacterial infections, including:
Minocycline inhibits bacterial protein synthesis, preventing susceptible microorganisms from growing and multiplying. It has activity against a range of Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria and certain other infectious organisms.
The official Japanese prescribing information states that the usual initial adult dose is 100–200 mg, followed by 100 mg every 12 or 24 hours. The dose may be adjusted according to the patient's age, body weight, symptoms and clinical condition.
Capsules should be taken with plenty of water. Taking Minomycin immediately before bedtime should be avoided because the capsule may remain in the esophagus and cause irritation or ulceration.
Active ingredient: Minocycline Hydrochloride — 50 mg or 100 mg per capsule.
Other ingredients include corn starch and magnesium stearate. The capsule shell contains titanium dioxide, iron oxide and sodium lauryl sulfate.
Possible adverse effects include nausea, loss of appetite, abdominal pain, dizziness, headache, skin rash, photosensitivity and changes in liver function tests.
Serious allergic, hepatic, renal, gastrointestinal and other reactions are possible. Seek medical attention if severe or unusual symptoms occur.
Minomycin should not be used by patients with a known hypersensitivity to tetracycline antibiotics. Special caution is required in patients with liver or kidney problems and during pregnancy or breastfeeding.
Iron, calcium, magnesium and aluminum products may reduce minocycline absorption. A 2–4 hour interval is generally recommended between these products and Minomycin.
