Product description

Modopar by Roche is a combination of levodopa, a dopamine precursor that crosses the blood-brain barrier, and benserazide, a peripheral decarboxylase inhibitor that prevents levodopa breakdown outside the brain and dramatically increases its central effect while reducing peripheral side effects.

Levodopa therapy has been the gold standard of Parkinson's disease management for over five decades. Dispersible tablets dissolve in water or can be chewed, which is convenient for patients with swallowing difficulties and allows flexible dosing.

Indications

• Parkinson's disease and parkinsonism of various origins
• parkinsonism after encephalitis, intoxication or vascular causes

Dosage and administration

The dose is highly individual and determined by the neurologist. Treatment usually starts with one tablet (100/25 mg) 1-3 times daily and is titrated gradually. Dispersible tablets may be dissolved in a small amount of water or taken whole with liquid. Take 30 minutes before or 1 hour after meals for better absorption.

Dose adjustments are made only by the treating physician; abrupt discontinuation should be avoided.
